Tomb of Sultan Ahmed I

Also known as: Achmet I, Sultan Ahmet Tomb

The türbe of Sultan Ahmed I is an early 17th-century Ottoman mausoleum standing directly beside the Blue Mosque in Istanbul's Sultanahmet district. Ahmed I came to the throne at just 13 years old and ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1603 until his death in 1617 at the age of 27, most likely from typhus. Completed shortly after his death, the tomb houses not only his sarcophagus but also those of several of his sons and wives, including the later sultans Osman II and Murad IV. The octagonal domed interior is lined with hand-painted İznik tiles and Quranic inscriptions that closely echo the decoration of the adjacent mosque. Administered by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the mausoleum is included in the national museum card scheme and is open to the public free of charge.
