İstanbul Modern

Also known as: Istanbul Museum of Modern Art

Istanbul Modern in Beyoglu is Turkey's first museum of modern and contemporary art, founded in 2004 in a converted Bosphorus warehouse at Karakoey. After spending several years in a temporary venue, it returned in 2023 to a Renzo Piano building on its original site, wrapped in a shimmering aluminium skin and topped by an open roof terrace right above the water. The collection traces Turkish art from the 1920s onward, with strong holdings of modernists like Burhan Dogancay, Fahrelnissa Zeid and Nuri Iyem, alongside international temporary shows and dedicated photography and video sections. A library, children's museum and education programmes anchor it firmly inside the Istanbul art scene. The cafe looks straight onto the Bosphorus traffic between Galataport and the old city.
