Byzantine ruins

This Byzantine wall segment is one of many scattered remnants of the fortifications that protected Constantinople through centuries of the Eastern Roman Empire. Systematic wall construction expanded under Emperor Theodosius II in the 5th century, and isolated sections still emerge between modern apartment blocks across the city. At present, a metal fence surrounds the site, blocking close inspection of the masonry. Visitor reports note the ruins are left to decay without maintenance — those who have already seen other Byzantine wall sections elsewhere in Istanbul may find little additional reason to seek this one out.
