St Boniface German Church

St Boniface's on Adler Street in London's East End is the historic home church of London's German-speaking Catholics. The parish dates back to the 19th-century wave of German migration, when brewers, sugar bakers and dock workers settled in the east of the city. The original 1875 church was destroyed by a V1 bomb in the Second World War; the present 1960 building is a restrained post-war modernist brick church with a bell tower and is listed Grade II. Sunday Mass is celebrated in German, drawing Berlin expats, southwest German catering families and Swabian bankers. Behind the church the German welfare office still offers advice for German-speaking Londoners.
