Saint Lawrence Church in Lohja

St. Lawrence Church in Lohja is one of the largest surviving medieval stone churches in Finland, standing at the centre of a small town about 60 kilometres west of Helsinki. It was built in the late 15th century on the foundations of an older wooden church and follows the southern Finnish hall-church type, with granite walls and a high pitched roof. Lohja is best known for its near-complete cycle of early 16th-century wall paintings, more than sixty scenes of biblical stories and saints' lives, including unusually frank portraits of local townspeople as donors. Today the interior is bright, the paintings read like an open book, and in summer local scouts staff the church and offer free guided tours.
