Kota Tinggi

Kota Tinggi is a quiet district capital in the Malaysian state of Johor, about 30 kilometers north of Johor Bahru on the Sungai Johor river. The name ('high town') is misleading - the settlement sits only a few meters above sea level and is regularly flooded, most severely in 2006/2007. The surrounding area played a major historical role as seat of the Sultanate of Johor between 1540 and 1623; remains of the former capital lie upstream. The main draw for visitors is Air Terjun Kota Tinggi (Lombong Waterfall) about 15 kilometers west of town, a 36-meter cascading waterfall with rainforest plunge pools. The town itself has a weekly market and small restaurants serving Johor laksa, but is mostly a stopover.
