Kunsthalle Helsinki

Kunsthalle Helsinki is a contemporary-art exhibition hall in the centre of the Finnish capital, inaugurated in 1928. The austere cubic building was designed in 1927 by Hilding Ekelund, one of Finland's most influential architects on the cusp between Nordic Classicism and Functionalism; the plain white facade and balanced proportions embody the interwar shift toward modernism. Unlike the Ateneum with its permanent collection, the Kunsthalle stages only rotating exhibitions and has been a platform for generations of Finnish artists, from Tyko Sallinen and Helene Schjerfbeck to contemporary names. Today it also hosts international solo and group shows and thematic surveys that connect Nordic and global art discourse.
