Kuntsevo Cemetery

Kuntsevo Cemetery on the western edge of Moscow dates back to the early 18th century and takes its name from the former village of Kuntsevo, now absorbed into the city. The grounds originated as a village graveyard beside a small wooden church and were repeatedly expanded as Moscow grew outward through the 20th century. The partly wooded site contains Orthodox cross-graves from the 18th and 19th centuries alongside Soviet headstones with engraved portrait photographs. The cemetery is protected as an object of Russia's cultural heritage and remains a quiet spot for walkers and history enthusiasts well away from the tourist core.
