Lake Village Confederate Monument

The Lake Village Confederate Monument stands on the median of Lakeshore Drive in Lake Village, Arkansas, between Main and Jackson Streets. The roughly six-foot marble figure depicts a Confederate soldier mid-stride, rifle held barrel-down in his right hand and a bedroll slung over his left shoulder. Monuments of this type were erected predominantly between the 1890s and 1950s as part of a deliberate effort to romanticize the Confederate cause — a movement historians call the Lost Cause narrative. A cannon that once doubled as a fountain was originally part of the composition but has since gone missing. The monument is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and sits squarely in the ongoing American debate over Confederate memorials in public spaces.
