Bratislava Castle

Bratislava Castle — known in Slovak as Bratislavský hrad — sits atop an 85-metre promontory above the left bank of the Danube, its four-towered silhouette marking the city's skyline from afar. The site has been fortified since at least the 9th century, though the castle's current rectangular Gothic footprint was largely established in the 15th century. As the seat of Hungarian kings and later Habsburg rulers, it held the Holy Crown of Hungary for centuries, making Bratislava — then called Pressburg — a pivotal centre of Central European power. A devastating fire in 1811 left the castle as a roofless ruin for over 150 years before a major reconstruction was completed in the late 20th century. Today it houses the Slovak National Museum's historical collections, and the castle terrace offers sweeping views over the Danube, the Old Town, and on clear days across the borders into Austria and Hungary.
