The Srebrenica–Potočari Memorial and Cemetery for the Victims of the 1995 Genocide stands in the village of Potočari, near Srebrenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In July 1995, units of the Bosnian Serb Army under Ratko Mladić killed at least 8,372 Bosniak Muslim men and boys — the worst atrocity on European soil since World War II, formally adjudicated as genocide by the International Court of Justice in 2007. The site, opened in 2003, includes a former UN safe-zone factory building now used as a documentation and exhibition hall, alongside an expansive burial ground where rows of white stone markers continue to receive newly identified victims as DNA identification work progresses. Every year on 11 July, tens of thousands gather for the commemoration ceremony.
