The former Zuchthaus in Cottbus served as a prison for political detainees throughout the East German period — people jailed for attempted flight from the GDR, dissent, or unauthorized religious activity. The facility was notorious for its harsh conditions and at times held hundreds of prisoners compelled to work in attached industrial operations. Today the memorial documents the injustice of the SED regime through permanent exhibitions, survivor testimonies, and educational programs for school groups. The preserved prison complex allows visitors to experience the architecture of confinement firsthand.
