Museo di Roma

The Museo di Roma in Palazzo Braschi, between Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori, is the city museum of Rome. The late Baroque and Neoclassical palace was begun in 1791 by Cosimo Morelli for the nephew of Pope Pius VI and is regarded as the last great papal palace built in Rome. Since 1952 the museum has documented Rome's history from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century with city-view paintings, papal sedan chairs, mosaics, sculpture, costumes and carnival fabrics from Trastevere. The Sala del Trono and the monumental staircase are particularly striking. The museum now forms part of the Musei di Roma Capitale network. Visitors gain a broad sense of how Rome grew from medieval market town into the capital of Italy.
