Museum of the Patriotic War of 1812

Also known as: Vaterländischer Krieg, Russian Campaign, Patriotic War of 1812 · +3

Moscow

Museum on Napoleon's 1812 Russian campaign, opened in 2012 for the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Borodino. It sits next to the State Historical Museum on Red Square, occupying the former Lenin Museum building. Holdings include uniforms, cavalry sabres, personal items of Kutuzov and Napoleon, plus battlefield maps and diaries. The highlight is Napoleon's travel sled, in which he fled across wintry Russia after defeat. The Russian campaign - culminating in the Moscow fire and the catastrophic retreat of the Grande Armee - is the origin of the term "Patriotic War" in Russian memory. Book online in advance; English audio guide available.
