Operalnia

Operalnia was the 18th-century name for Warsaw's first public opera house, built in 1748 by order of King Augustus III of Poland. The commission went to Carl Friedrich Poeppelmann, son of the architect of the Dresden Zwinger, who placed the building on the edge of the Saxon Garden. It linked Saxon and Polish stage culture and was an early example of a publicly accessible court opera in Catholic central Europe. The structure survived into the early 19th century and is no longer standing. Today only plaques and occasional walking-tour stops mark its location in the present-day Ogród Saski.
