Monument
Also known as: The 9/11 Pentagon Memorial
The Pentagon Memorial in Arlington commemorates the 184 people killed at the Pentagon and aboard American Airlines Flight 77 on September 11, 2001. Designed by Julie Beckman and Keith Kaseman, it opened in 2008. 184 cantilevered stainless-steel benches, each bearing a victim's name, rise from a bed of gravel above small reflecting pools. The benches are oriented so that those for the airplane victims face west and those for the Pentagon victims face east, arranged by year of birth. Visitors enter the two-acre field directly beside the point of impact. The memorial is open 24 hours a day and is free to visit.
