Capitol Hill
Also known as: Capitol Hill Historic District, The Hill, Capitol Hill, DC
Capitol Hill is the hill and surrounding residential neighbourhood east of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. As shorthand it stands for the U.S. Congress; geographically it is one of the largest Victorian-era residential districts in the country. The streets south of East Capitol Street were built up from the 1870s with brick rowhouses in Italianate and Second Empire styles. Senators, members of Congress and lobbyists live here alongside families and students, and Eastern Market is the weekend gathering point. The best way to visit is to combine a Capitol tour with a walk through the quiet residential streets, a stop at the Library of Congress, and lunch in one of the Pennsylvania Avenue SE pubs.
