Feriköy Protestant Cemetery

The Evangelicorum Commune Coemeterium in Istanbul's Ferikoey district has been the shared Protestant cemetery for the city's Reformed and Lutheran communities since 1859. It came into being when Sultan Abdulmecid granted the Protestants a plot outside the old city walls after the earlier cemeteries in Pera had to make way for growing traffic. Between cedars and cypresses lie around 3,000 graves of German, English, Dutch and American Levantines: merchants, embassy staff, deaconesses and soldiers killed in both world wars. The same Ferikoey block contains the Catholic and Jewish cemeteries as well. The site is run by an international committee of associations; access is via the locked main gate on Mevlana Caddesi by prior arrangement.
