St. Georg is a late-Gothic hall church in the Thuringian town of Schmalkalden, built between 1413/14 and 1509. Its defining feature is the hall-church layout, where nave and aisles rise to the same height — a hallmark of late-Gothic ecclesiastical architecture in central Germany. Schmalkalden holds particular significance in Reformation history: the Schmalkaldic League, a defensive alliance of Protestant princes against Emperor Charles V, was formed here in 1531, and St. Georg subsequently became an evangelical parish church. Listed as a protected cultural monument in Thuringia, it anchors the town's historic center alongside the Renaissance Wilhelmsburg castle.
