Statue of Dr. Anthonius Franciscus Bauduin

This bronze memorial commemorates Anthonius Franciscus Bauduin (1820–1885), a Dutch military physician who served as a medical adviser to the Japanese government during the Meiji period. Bauduin is credited with helping establish the Nagasaki medical school and, crucially, with persuading authorities to preserve the grounds of a former Tokyo military site as public green space — land that would eventually become Ueno Park. The statue stands as a quiet marker of the deep intellectual exchange between the Netherlands and Meiji-era Japan.
