National Museum of Western Art

The National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo's Ueno Park is the largest museum in Asia for European and North American art from the medieval period to the 20th century. It opened in 1959 to house the Matsukata Collection, assembled in Paris before World War I by shipping magnate Kojiro Matsukata, seized in France during the war and returned in 1959 as a gesture of peace. The main building was designed by Le Corbusier, his only completed work in Asia, and was inscribed in 2016 on the UNESCO World Heritage List alongside sixteen other Le Corbusier buildings across seven countries. The collection includes Rubens, Monet, Renoir, van Gogh and Picasso, plus dozens of Rodin bronzes in the forecourt, among them the Thinker and the Gates of Hell. The main floor's spiral plan is classic Corbusier, with rooms unwinding outward.
