Syonan Jinja

Syonan Jinja was a Shinto shrine constructed by the Japanese Imperial Army at MacRitchie Reservoir during Japan's occupation of Singapore from 1942 to 1945 — the name "Syonan" being the Japanese designation for the occupied city. In a deliberate act just before British forces retook Singapore, the army demolished the shrine themselves, leaving almost nothing behind. Today only scattered ruins remain, absorbed into the dense rainforest of the MacRitchie nature reserve. The site is not formally marked or managed, but it draws visitors interested in the layered, often uncomfortable memory of the Japanese occupation — a chapter of Singapore's history that sits uneasily between commemoration and erasure.
