Tinnumburg

The Tinnumburg is a vanished ringwall fortification near the village of Tinnum on the island of Sylt, today barely visible as a low earthen embankment in the landscape. Its precise dating remains contested — archaeologists have attributed it to both the Iron Age and the early medieval period, and its function as a defensive enclosure or communal gathering site is still debated. Unlike preserved medieval castles, it left almost no standing structure, making it more of an archaeological puzzle than a monument. Visitors encounter an open heath landscape on Sylt's interior, a quiet reminder of the island's prehistoric settlement that rewards the curious more than the casual tourist.
