火あぶり地蔵尊

This small wayside shrine in Tokyo is dedicated to Jizo Bosatsu, a Buddhist protective deity associated with travellers, children, and the deceased. The name — literally 'Burnt-at-the-Stake Jizo' — points to an Edo-period tradition connecting this spot to an execution by fire, with the shrine erected to pacify the spirit of the condemned and avert lingering misfortune. Such memorial shrines are a recurring feature of Tokyo's urban fabric, often tucked beside walls or at street corners where tragedy once occurred. Visitors leave flowers, coins, and incense in a quiet act of folk piety that has persisted across centuries of city growth.
