Bilderstöckchen

Bilderstöckchen is a northern Cologne district formed administratively in 1969 from portions of Neu-Ehrenfeld, Ossendorf, and Nippes. Its name derives from a Bilderstöckchen — a small Rhenish wayside shrine, typically a stone or wooden niche housing a holy image — of the kind erected for centuries at crossroads and field paths across the Rhineland to protect travellers and commemorate the dead. Such devotional markers were once a defining feature of everyday religious life in this part of Germany but gradually vanished as the city expanded and urbanised. The specific shrine recorded in OSM as a historic Christian place of worship is a quiet, easily overlooked remnant of that folk-religious streetscape, and the reason an entire district carries its name today.
