kuromon

The Black Gate (Kuromon) is the historic main gate of Kinpusen-ji, one of the most important temples of Shugendō, a syncretic religion blending Buddhist and Shinto mountain asceticism in the Yoshino-yama region south of Nara. The temple complex traces its origins to the 7th century and forms the spiritual anchor of a pilgrimage route now inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Yoshino-Kumano. Yoshino-yama has been celebrated since the Heian period for its layered cherry blossoms, which draw pilgrims and visitors alike each spring. The gate itself is a well-preserved example of medieval Japanese timber architecture, reached after a climb through the historic village of Yoshino.
