Dolmabahçe Clock Tower

The Dolmabahçe Clock Tower stands on the European shore of the Bosphorus in Istanbul's Beşiktaş district, wedged between the Dolmabahçe Palace and its adjacent mosque. Sultan Abdülhamid II commissioned it between 1890 and 1895, with the design attributed to court architect Sarkis Balyan, who gave the 30-meter structure a neo-baroque exterior layered with Empire-style ornament. The tower was part of a broader late-Ottoman campaign to erect public clock towers as symbols of modernization and alignment with European norms. Today it serves as the unmistakable gateway marker of the palace complex, with open views across the Bosphorus from the waterfront promenade below.
