About Akureyri

Akureyri sits at the head of Eyjafjörður in northern Iceland and, with a population of around 20,000, is the country's second-largest urban centre. Often called the capital of North Iceland, the city enjoys a comparatively mild climate despite lying just south of the Arctic Circle. The surrounding mountains — including Glerárdalshnjúkur, Fúinhyrna, Hestur, and Jafnafell — draw hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, while the Akureyri Botanical Garden ranks among the world's northernmost.
