Aldeyjarfoss

Aldeyjarfoss is a waterfall deep in the Icelandic highlands, located at the northern end of the Sprengisandur route — one of the oldest trans-Iceland highland tracks. Its defining feature is the ring of vertical basalt columns that frame the drop, formed when ancient lava flows cooled slowly and fractured into near-perfect hexagonal prisms. The water falls roughly 20 metres into a narrow, dark gorge carved through this volcanic rock. Reaching it requires a 4WD vehicle and is only feasible in summer, as the F26 highland road is closed for much of the year. The remoteness is part of the appeal — visitors are typically few, and the contrast between the white cascade and jet-black basalt makes for a striking natural composition.
