At 216 Nanjing Road West in the heart of Shanghai''s Huangpu district stands the Grand Cinema — one of the finest Art Deco picture houses in Asia. Opened in 1933, it was immediately the most prestigious cinema in the city: more than 2,000 seats, a sweeping facade, and an interior that translated the glamour of Hollywood''s golden age into a Shanghai setting. In the heyday of Chinese cinema during the 1930s and 40s, the Grand Cinema was where the most important films had their premieres, at the centre of Shanghai''s flourishing sound-film industry. The building survived the city''s turbulent 20th century intact and is now protected as a historic monument. It continues to operate as a working cinema, showing both Chinese and international films in an atmosphere that still echoes the interwar era of movie-going.

K11 Shanghai (formerly Hong Kong New World Tower)

K11 in Shanghai is a 61-storey, 278-metre skyscraper in the Xintiandi district. Originally constructed as the Hong Kong New World Tower, the building was relaunched in 2013 as K11, a high-end shopping destination with a distinctive art-retail concept. Sculptures and contemporary art installations are integrated throughout the shopping floors, making it feel more gallery than typical mall. The building stands above the Yan'an Elevated Road and overlooks People's Square, and is regarded as one of China's pioneers of concept-driven retail.

Shanghai Hongqiao Airport is the oldest still-operating airport in China — the site dates back to 1907, when the first aircraft landed here. Today it lies in the western districts of Changning and Minhang, just about 13 kilometers from the city center, making it far more conveniently located than the modern Pudong Airport. Hongqiao focuses on domestic flights and is part of a vast integrated transport hub combining airport, high-speed rail, and metro under one roof. For domestic travelers in China, it is one of the most practical nodes in the country.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport is one of two international airports serving Shanghai and, with approximately 85 million passengers annually, the largest in China and one of the five busiest in the world. Opened in 1999 on reclaimed land in the Pudong district east of the city centre, it has been massively expanded since. In cargo volume it ranks second globally, behind only Hong Kong. China Eastern Airlines uses it as its primary hub. The Maglev Transrapid connects the airport to the city centre in just eight minutes — the fastest commercially operated magnetic levitation train in the world.
