Culture in Florence

Florence, the capital of Tuscany, is home to a remarkable concentration of culturally significant religious buildings. The basilicas of San Lorenzo, Santa Maria Novella, Santa Croce and Santo Spirito are among the city's defining structures, while Santa Maria del Carmine stands out for its celebrated Brancacci Chapel. San Miniato al Monte rises visibly above the Arno valley on the southern hills. Beyond the city centre, the Abbazia di Vallombrosa and the Badia di Settimo offer quieter encounters with Florentine monastic culture. The Basilica della Santissima Annunziata, the Badia Fiorentina and the Basilica dell'Osservanza round out a picture that weaves together architecture, history and living tradition.
