Castello di Vincigliata

Castello di Vincigliata perches on a rocky outcrop east of Fiesole, commanding wide views over the Florentine hills. Founded in 1031, the castle had crumbled to a ruin by the mid-1800s when English expatriate John Temple-Leader purchased it in 1855 and had it entirely rebuilt in a romantic feudal idiom — less a scholarly restoration than a Victorian fantasy of what a medieval stronghold should feel like. Temple-Leader furnished it with frescoed interiors, crenellated towers, and a terraced garden park, creating an ensemble that became a fashionable destination for the Anglo-Florentine community of the Risorgimento era. Today the castle and its wooded hillside park remain one of the quieter escapes from Florence, reachable on foot via trails from Fiesole.
