History in Amman

Amman holds layers of history stretching back thousands of years. The Amman Citadel offers one of the most immediate encounters with that depth, and the Jordan Archaeological Museum alongside it houses remarkable finds including the Ayn Ghazal statues, among the earliest large human figurines ever discovered. Ajlun Castle, the Hasmonean royal winter palaces, and Alexandreion reach into biblical and medieval times. The Al Husseini Mosque and King Abdullah I Mosque represent distinct periods of Islamic architecture, while Hisham's Palace and Khirbet es-Samra reflect Umayyad building traditions. The Allenby Bridge connects the city to the region's more recent past.
