Mysterious places in Frankfurt

Frankfurt am Main has a mysterious side that stretches well beyond its famous skyline. In the Taunus hills, the Altkönig and Bleibeskopf rise as ancient witnesses to a Celtic past, while castles such as Falkenstein, Frankenstein, Frauenstein and Scharfenstein loom from the ridgelines. Further afield, Burg Ronneburg, the ruined Münzenberg and Burg Eltville invite quiet exploration. Closer to the city, the decommissioned Heiligenstock transmission station and the cavernous Bockenheimer Depot exude an atmosphere all their own — as does the unassuming but history-laden Berger Kirche. This region rewards those who look beyond the obvious.
