Beneath the bright avenues of Paris lies a city that never sees sunlight. The Catacombs of Paris arrange the remains of six million people along quarried passages with an order that feels almost ceremonial — bone stacked against bone for two centuries. Nearby, the Égouts thread a watery labyrinth beneath the boulevards, smelling of the city digested. Above ground, the Musée de la Franc-Maçonnerie keeps its symbols legible only to the initiated, while the Musée de la magie coils through basement vaults with conjuring apparatus from the eighteenth century onward. Even the Elephant of the Bastille haunts the city as an absence — the colossal unbuilt monument where Victor Hugo once housed Gavroche, gone now but not forgotten.
