Roman Theatre Archaeological Site

Excavated in the late 1990s, the Roman Theatre in Mainz was once the largest Roman stage theatre north of the Alps, with a diameter of 116 metres, a stage width of 42 metres, and seating for around 10,000 spectators. It served as a cultural centrepiece of Mogontiacum — the Roman city that became modern Mainz — likely constructed during the early Imperial period. The archaeological site sits directly beside the Mainz Römisches Theater suburban rail station, making it easily accessible, though only the lower walls and foundation outlines remain visible today. As a protected cultural monument, it offers a tangible glimpse into the urban planning and entertainment culture of the Roman province of Germania Superior.
