Aachen Town Hall

Aachen Town Hall was built in 1353 in the Gothic style on the foundations of Charlemagne's Carolingian imperial palace, making it one of the most historically layered civic buildings in Germany. Its stepped gable and imposing north facade are key examples of secular Gothic architecture in western Germany. The interior Coronation Hall — where medieval German kings held banquets following their Aachen coronations — is decorated with 19th-century frescoes depicting scenes from Charlemagne's life. The building still functions as the seat of Aachen's mayor and city council, and each year hosts the Karlspreis ceremony, awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to European unity. Open daily 10:00–18:00 and fully wheelchair accessible.
