Elisengarten

Elisengarten is a compact urban park in central Aachen, laid out between 1852 and 1854 to designs by Peter Joseph Lenné, Prussia's most celebrated landscape architect. It was created as part of Aachen's flourishing spa culture and named after Princess Elisabeth of Bavaria, wife of the future Emperor Frederick III. The adjacent Elisenbrunnen — a neoclassical colonnaded rotunda with Tuscan columns — frames the park on its northern edge, giving the whole ensemble a cohesive early-19th-century character. Today the garden serves as an everyday gathering spot: office workers eat lunch on the lawn, cyclists pass through on marked paths, and from almost anywhere in the park the twin spires of Aachen Cathedral are visible against the skyline.
