Abbaye de Gellone

The Abbaye de Gellone, housed within the village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, is a Benedictine abbey founded in 804 by Guilhem of Orange, a companion of Charlemagne who retired here as a hermit carrying a relic of the True Cross. That relic transformed the remote site into a major pilgrimage stop on the Via Tolosana, one of the four historic French routes to Santiago de Compostela — a status recognized in 1998 when the complex was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France'. The Romanesque abbey church and its cloister, listed as a Monument historique since 1840, survive in remarkable condition given their age. The village sits inside a dramatic limestone gorge of the Hérault river, lending the whole site an atmosphere of deep seclusion that medieval pilgrims would still recognize.
