Abbaye de Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe

The Abbey of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe, set in the Vienne countryside some 40 kilometres east of Poitiers, is among the finest surviving examples of Romanesque architecture in France. Construction of the abbey church began in the mid-11th century, making it the earliest vaulted structure in the Poitou region. What sets it apart is the near-complete cycle of 11th- and 12th-century ceiling frescoes covering the nave, narthex, and crypt — depicting scenes from Genesis, Exodus, and the Book of Revelation in muted ochres and greens that have barely faded in nine centuries. The sheer scale and preservation of this pictorial programme has earned it the informal title 'the Romanesque Sistine Chapel.' UNESCO inscribed the abbey on the World Heritage List in 1983, and a small on-site museum contextualises both the painting techniques and the Benedictine community that commissioned them.
