Abbazia di San Liberatore a Majella

The Abbey of San Liberatore a Maiella is an early 11th-century Romanesque monastic church set in isolation in the Abruzzo foothills of the Majella massif. Earlier structures on the site dated to the 9th century, though no physical trace of them survives; the extant building was constructed from 1001 onwards as a priory of the powerful Benedictine abbey of Montecassino, whose archive still holds all surviving documents relating to San Liberatore. Designated an Italian national monument, the church displays the restrained vocabulary of central-Italian Romanesque: ashlar sandstone walls, round-arched arcades, and an unadorned facade. The surrounding landscape remains largely unspoiled, lending the site a quiet, almost contemplative character that is rare even by rural Abruzzese standards.
