Abbaye de Saint-Yved

The abbey church of Saint-Yved in Braine, near Reims, is a refined example of early Gothic architecture begun around 1180 under Premonstratensian canons. It served as the dynastic necropolis of the Counts of Dreux, whose elaborate tombs once filled the interior — making it one of the more significant royal funerary sites in medieval northern France. The church was endowed with the relics of Saint Yved, and a 9th-century consecration points to an even older sacred tradition on the site. Since 1840 it has held classified Monument Historique status, among the first buildings protected under France's landmark preservation law. Inside, visitors find slender Gothic piers and ribbed vaulting largely intact, a calm counterpoint to the more visited cathedrals of the Champagne region.
