Abbazia di Santa Maria Arabona

The Abbazia di Santa Maria Arabona is a former Cistercian abbey dating to around 1201, perched on a hilltop above the Pescara river in the commune of Manoppello, in Italy's Abruzzo region. Designated a national monument, it ranks among the finest Romanesque ecclesiastical structures in central Italy — the Cistercian hallmarks of austere stonework, a clean three-apse layout, and restrained ornamentation are all legible despite centuries of partial abandonment. The monastery fell largely out of use after the 16th century, lending the surviving fabric a melancholy stillness that distinguishes it from heavily restored counterparts.
