Abbazia Mater Ecclesiae

The Abbazia Mater Ecclesiae is a Benedictine nuns' monastery on the Isola San Giulio, a tiny island in the Orta Lake of Piedmont, founded in 1973 under the Marian patronage of Mary, Mother of the Church. The cloistered community is known beyond the region for the production of finely crafted liturgical vestments and paraments, a tradition that combines spiritual devotion with expert textile craft. Visitors can reach the island by ferry from Orta San Giulio, but the monastery itself remains largely closed to the public. The combination of island isolation, still lake waters, and austere monastic architecture gives the site a quality of deep withdrawal rarely found at active religious communities in northern Italy.
