Abbazia San Martino al Cimino

The former Cistercian abbey of San Martino al Cimino sits at the northern edge of the Monti Cimini volcanic hills, about 6 kilometres south of Viterbo, directly along the medieval Via Francigena pilgrimage road to Rome. Founded around 1150, it held the rare status of an exempt abbey answering directly to the Holy See rather than any local bishop. The architecture reflects core Cistercian doctrine as codified under Bernard of Clairvaux: rounded arches, restrained cloister structures, and a deliberate absence of decorative excess. Today it forms part of the small village of San Martino al Cimino, a frazione of Viterbo, and remains a quiet waypoint for pilgrims and travellers drawn by its austere medieval atmosphere and wooded hillside setting.
