Abbaye de Grandselve

Founded in 1101, Grandselve Abbey was once among the most important Cistercian monasteries in southern France, situated in the commune of Bouillac in the Tarn-et-Garonne département, roughly 40 km northwest of Toulouse. At its medieval peak, the complex served as both a spiritual and economic hub for the surrounding region, with the Cistercian order — known for its austere reinterpretation of the Benedictine rule — developing extensive agricultural estates alongside the monastic buildings. The French Revolution brought dissolution and widespread destruction; the surviving fragments of Romanesque Cistercian stonework are today all that remain of what was once a sprawling complex. A dedicated website documents the original layout and buildings, helping visitors reconstruct the abbey's former scale. The rural Occitan setting lends the ruins a quiet, contemplative character that distinguishes it from more frequented monastic sites.
