Avon Aqueduct
LandscapeEngineering MarvelRiver Valley+2
The Almondell Aqueduct is a stone canal bridge built in 1822 within Almondell Country Park in West Lothian, carrying the Union Canal over the River Almond. It holds Category A listed status and is classified as a Scheduled Monument — Scotland's dual highest tier of heritage protection. The aqueduct was part of the Union Canal opened in 1822 to link Edinburgh with the Forth and Clyde Canal, primarily serving coal traffic. It is frequently confused with the similarly named Almond Aqueduct near Broxburn, located some 500 metres downstream. The old towpath alongside now forms a walking route through wooded river valley, connecting the structure to the surrounding country park.
