Abergavenny Castle

Abergavenny Castle is a Norman ruin in Monmouthshire, Wales, founded around 1087 in the wake of the Norman Conquest and today protected as both a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Monument. The castle earned a dark reputation in Welsh history: in 1175, Norman lord Ranulf de Breos invited Welsh chieftain Seisyll ap Dyfnwal and his retinue to a feast and had them massacred, an act so notorious it gave Abergavenny the Welsh epithet 'the murder capital of Wales.' Today the surviving gatehouse tower and curtain walls stand within a pleasant public park just south of the town center. A small museum inside the tower covers the castle's history and its place in the wider story of the Welsh Marches.
