Adam Mickiewicz Monument

The bronze statue of Adam Mickiewicz stands at the center of Kraków's Rynek Główny — the main market square — and is one of the most recognizable public monuments in Poland. Mickiewicz was the preeminent poet of Polish Romanticism; his 1834 epic Pan Tadeusz functioned as an unofficial national literature for a Poland that had been partitioned out of existence. The current monument dates to 1955, replacing an 1898 original that Nazi occupiers melted down during World War II. Affectionately nicknamed "Adaś" by locals, the statue serves as an everyday gathering point — as likely to anchor a political rally as an impromptu street concert or a tourist meet-up before exploring the surrounding medieval alleyways.
