Błonia Park

Błonia is a 48-hectare open meadow just west of Kraków's Old Town — one of the largest undeveloped green spaces in the center of any major European city. Its most dramatic moment came in 1979, when Pope John Paul II, a Kraków native, celebrated an open-air mass here that drew over two million people; further papal masses followed in 1983 and 2002. Protected as an immovable cultural monument under Polish law, the grounds cannot be built upon, preserving their vast, unbroken character. Locals use the meadow daily for jogging, cycling, and picnics, and the eastern edge offers a clear sightline to Wawel Hill.
